Jenna DeLaurentis is a content creator, photographer, documentarian and blogger. She is currently working for a cruise ship company, and is wanting to start a blog of her own as she goes on her cruise adventures—something that’s more of her own voice. She also travels quite a bit on her own outside of cruise ships, and she wants to expand her brand ‘outside of the ship.’

She is very interested in traveling to Latin American countries and especially wants to write about them. She speaks fluent Spanish.

  • Those who travel a lot, or dream of traveling a lot

  • Generally American, but could be for English speakers around the world

  • Leaning toward targeting women without being direct

inspiration

Jenna had a look at some of the portfolio concepts that I had made, and she was drawn to this concept I made called “Sprinkles Preschool”—particularly the font and the colors.

process

When creating the first looks of the branding, I first tried with the same colored font that I used for Sprinkles Preschool, and tried to find a way to translate it to another font and different colors, as I wasn’t sure if all the colors that were included in the original font would work.

I settled fairly quickly with Futura for a font, as well as a concept of a heart with a path along a plane, and experimented with color.

first look

I wanted to find something that was a little less pink so that it doesn’t cut off any potential markets that may not be as attracted to a pink, feminine travel blog. So I ended going with this saturated, cool-toned color scheme.

Jenna liked the direction it was going but wanted more warm tones in addition to the greens and blues.

my learning moments

Jenna is a very creative person with a strong vision, and I think there were a few times where we had bumped heads when it comes to the color scheme and other kinds of philosophical elements. She was very much into bold colors and was set on that, and I tend to go for bold but not as saturated colors. My main instinct is to choose a cream color rather than a stark white.

So this design was a bit outside of my comfort zone, both color wise and font wise, but I was happy that Jenna pushed me to find something that was appropriate for her blog and her style.

Jenna is also a lot more technically capable to be able to produce creative material with the designs, so it was easy to cater to her technical needs. She knew what she was doing when it comes to Adobe Programs, and is able to invest in that technology. Most of my other clients don’t have Adobe available to them, and they don’t have the resources to learn how to use the programs. Doing this project helped me realize how much work I put in with my other clients for technical education and accommodation, and I made sure to make that a clearer part of my process and my quotes.
